The Operational AI Opportunity in Healthcare

Clinical AI gets all the attention. The administrative opportunity might be bigger.

The healthcare AI conversation is dominated by clinical applications. AI that helps diagnose cancer, predict patient deterioration, discover new drugs. These are genuinely exciting and important.

But the near term opportunity that is getting less attention is operational. Healthcare organisations spend an enormous amount of time and money on administrative work. Documentation, billing, prior authorisations, scheduling, compliance. Most of it is still largely manual.

Clinical documentation alone represents a significant burden. Physicians in many health systems spend as much time documenting care as they spend delivering it. AI that can handle this work automatically has a direct impact on patient access and physician wellbeing.

Revenue cycle management is another area where AI can make a meaningful difference. Claim denials, billing errors and slow collections cost healthcare organisations billions of dollars a year. A lot of this is addressable with better automation.

The organisations moving fastest on operational AI in healthcare are finding that the ROI is strong and the implementation is relatively straightforward compared to clinical applications. It is a good place to start.
